135,000 for 70,000

Reading the Star just now and this news article brings back memories.

Nearly 135,000 students applied for 70,000 places in our public universities, which means nearly half of that number would be turned away.

I remembered when i was that age.

Exam results were out. Rushed to school to collect STPM results. Barely scrapped through.

Next, fill in some forms, pray very hard to get into varsity.

Next few weeks was agony. Then called the Infoline. Given some code for course and university place offered.

Initially thanked god I got in. Then dissapointment eventhough i did get the course that i wanted but not the university of my choice. Well, beggars cant be choosy.

Went to uni, a bit of a culture shock, but in the end enjoyed my stint tremendously.

Best of luck to the applicants. Hope most could be as LUCKY as i was.

Manchester United and Swiss Open

ManU overcomed Bolton 4-1 at Old Trafford over the weekend, with a brace from Park JS and Rooney. Chelsea also won to keep the score difference at 6 points.

On another note, Koo and Tan successfully won the Swiss Open last night, claiming their 2nd title in 2 weeks after their success in the All-England

Monday Blues

Wow ..how fast the weekend passed.

Was so in tune and busy with work, that I didn’t really realized the weekend flew so quick.

Lets have a weekend recap ….

Saturday, wanted to go jogging with GF in the morning but scrapped the plan after noticing it was raining heavily. Had a short work discussion with some associates over breakfast and then went home to finish off some work on an ongoing project.

The evening were less eventful, with dinner appointment and picking up GF after she attended a wedding dinner.

Sunday, slept in late. Picked up GF from church and caught a movie after a long long time. Pursuit of Happyness … really good movie.

Met a close friend HC at the movies. He was with somebody and I casually just went over and said hi.

Imagine GF and my surprise when we found out that he wasn’t with his partner but with someone else. I was left speechless for a few second and I was so takenly aback.

Spoke to HC after I went back. He was worried what GF would think about it and would she mention it to his partner. I assured him his secret is safe with us.

So it got me thinking. Is long-term relationship without marriage a dangerous thing? HC has been going out with partner for about 7 years and has no immediate plan to get attached.

Is marriage the key to stop philandering hearts? Hmmmmm ……..

All-England Champion

Heartiest congratulations to Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, as they again demonstrated why they are the world’s most exciting young pair at the All-England

They beat China’s world champions Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun to end Malaysia’s 25-year wait, in dazzling style winning 21-15, 21-18 in 39 minutes.

The duo, formed only months ago showed determination and grit, as well as skill and composure to win the tournament. Adding to the DOHA Asian Games team gold medal, they have shown yet again that Malaysians can do well in the international sporting arena, but only with the right attitude.

Lets continue to look at our other sad sport affairs.

In football, we are so lowly ranked that it is embarrasing. Our hockey team has declined so badly that now they might not be called for tournaments or even as spar partners with the other team.

Where have we gone wrong?

Loads of cash is being channelled into sports, for foreign coaches, for top-of-the-range facilities (remember the London centre), winning incentives, sports schools yet we cannot produce world class athletes (Nicole David and Josiah Ng is a different class).

Anyhow, congrats again to our badminton players and keep the Jalur Gemilang flying high.

SPM Blunder

This was in the news a few days back.

This poor girl was purportedly hailed as the best student in the country, scoring a massive 19 1A in her SPM examinations, beating the previous record of 17 1A previously held by another girl a few years back.

And the best part is, there was already banners and posters glorifying her achievement from where she came from.
Unfortunately, when the results were really released, she only scored a 18 As ... which four A's were 2A .... (by my standard, that's a crazy result already)

Can you imagine the mental torture the poor girl has to endure? All the hype and publicity and then, whoosh ... it was all a BLUNDER by the MEDIA.

Another point i like to make is, are we too obsessed with the number of A's rather than the overall performance of our students?

And how come the media has the information even before the results have been released?

All in all, poor girl. Imagine saying you won a Billion Dollar lottery and then tell you it was a blunder.

Office Politics

Was on Medical Leave today. Viral infection and a bad sore throat. UnFortunately the BOSS was not around. What a waste to get a day OFF when the BOSS is not around. #crap#

Was talking to a friend on MSN just now. She was complaining about some of her colleagues having a very bad work ethic.

Back-stabbing, rumor-mongering and the works, for the main purpose of getting into the good books of their employer.

I know how it works. Being an employee and later as an employer, i can truly vow that this is really happening.

Who said climbing the corporate ladder is easy?

Besides hard work and being extremely bright, politicking and arse licking seems to be the flavour of the month.

Word of advice : work for yourself, or join the bandwagon.

The Five People You Meet In Heaven - MITCH ALBOM

A simple yet agonisingly interesting read.

Gives a new insight into our lives, the people we touch and the people who touch us.

The whole circle of cause-and-effect, where whatever you do will effect someone or something, even without you noticing it.

Brilliant read for during tea time. Easily understood

Clash of the Titans Part 1

Had an argument with GF on Sunday over breakfast.

Was because of something i said ... again. Im as perplex as the guy next door. Being overly sensitive is definitely not a wonderful thing.

A recap. Am attached with GF for the past 8 months. We were former class mates, then we lost contact after high school. Met up again beginning of last year and after a whirlwind courtship, got together in July last year.

The first few months were blissful, learning to understand each other, exchanging opinions on issues and creating intellectual conversation together. My dream girl, someone who i could at least hold a decent conversation with.

Then came the sensitive and stubborn part. And the constact arguments and tantrums.

Things that we say to each other, or sometimes the jokes that we share turns awfully awry.

Then the tantrums start over something small, the phone calls she doesnt pick up, the sms she doesn't reply.

Im sick of it. And tired of it.

This is not how a healthy relationship should progress.

Anyway, im taking a break ..from her.

Its been a day and a half since we last spoke.

Middlesbrough 2 - 2 Manchester United

Quater-final of the FA CUP. Laarson's final match before he returns to Helsingborg in Sweden.

Devils were fantastic in the first half, leading with a Rooney snap shot before Boro equalised right at half time.

After the break, Boro took a suprise lead, from a corner kick in the very first minute. Ronaldo saved the Devils blushes with a clinical penalty after a handball incident.

Replay at OLD TRAFFORD.

FYI, Chelsea came back from the dead to draw 3-3 with Spurs. Spurs deserved the win.

Manchester United 1-0 Lille

ManU took the field at Old Trafford protecting a slim 1-0 lead from the 1st leg 2 weeks ago in France. For those not familiar with game, this is the 2nd round 2nd leg results of the UEFA Champions League.

Laarson was spectacular with his 3rd goals for the Devils after a fantastic run and pass from the ‘Gifted’ Ronaldo in the 72nd minute.

Overall, ManU didn’t actually play that well, but these are material of a CHAMP, being able to grind results even when the team is playing well below par.

Watch out teams, the Devils are on a roll.

Inaugural Posting

It is nearly 6pm, and I just finished reading a few blogs that i frequent quite often.

Honestly, I have been reading a lot of blogs lately. Initially it was for the fun of it but now I find blog writing a good form of stress reliever and a great way to write what you believe without being judged.

I admit I am sometimes a very judgmental person. Being the eldest in the family, I have always made sure I get my way. Not only in material terms (when I was younger) but now, I press my opinions very hard across to people I meet.

I can be a pain in the arse most of the time. My friends can’t tolerate my stubbornness to opinions that I have, especially on matters related close to my heart, like government policy (and how stupid some opinions can be) as well as my heartfelt love to Manchester United FC. My dream would be to walk and touch the ground of Old Trafford.

My blog would most probably contain opinions on current issues, footie news (especially on the Red Devils) and other testosterone induce topics like cars, books, eating places and relationship.

I welcome comments and anything remotely assembles a comment or opinion.

Welcome to my domain.
