135,000 for 70,000
Reading the Star just now and this news article brings back memories.
Nearly 135,000 students applied for 70,000 places in our public universities, which means nearly half of that number would be turned away.
I remembered when i was that age.
Exam results were out. Rushed to school to collect STPM results. Barely scrapped through.
Next, fill in some forms, pray very hard to get into varsity.
Next few weeks was agony. Then called the Infoline. Given some code for course and university place offered.
Initially thanked god I got in. Then dissapointment eventhough i did get the course that i wanted but not the university of my choice. Well, beggars cant be choosy.
Went to uni, a bit of a culture shock, but in the end enjoyed my stint tremendously.
Best of luck to the applicants. Hope most could be as LUCKY as i was.

Manchester United and Swiss Open
ManU overcomed Bolton 4-1 at Old Trafford over the weekend, with a brace from Park JS and Rooney. Chelsea also won to keep the score difference at 6 points.
On another note, Koo and Tan successfully won the Swiss Open last night, claiming their 2nd title in 2 weeks after their success in the All-England

Monday Blues
Wow ..how fast the weekend passed.
Was so in tune and busy with work, that I didn’t really realized the weekend flew so quick.
Lets have a weekend recap ….
Saturday, wanted to go jogging with GF in the morning but scrapped the plan after noticing it was raining heavily. Had a short work discussion with some associates over breakfast and then went home to finish off some work on an ongoing project.
The evening were less eventful, with dinner appointment and picking up GF after she attended a wedding dinner.
Sunday, slept in late. Picked up GF from church and caught a movie after a long long time. Pursuit of Happyness … really good movie.
Met a close friend HC at the movies. He was with somebody and I casually just went over and said hi.
Imagine GF and my surprise when we found out that he wasn’t with his partner but with someone else. I was left speechless for a few second and I was so takenly aback.
Spoke to HC after I went back. He was worried what GF would think about it and would she mention it to his partner. I assured him his secret is safe with us.
So it got me thinking. Is long-term relationship without marriage a dangerous thing? HC has been going out with partner for about 7 years and has no immediate plan to get attached.
Is marriage the key to stop philandering hearts? Hmmmmm ……..

All-England Champion
Heartiest congratulations to Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, as they again demonstrated why they are the world’s most exciting young pair at the All-England
They beat China’s world champions Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun to end Malaysia’s 25-year wait, in dazzling style winning 21-15, 21-18 in 39 minutes.
The duo, formed only months ago showed determination and grit, as well as skill and composure to win the tournament. Adding to the DOHA Asian Games team gold medal, they have shown yet again that Malaysians can do well in the international sporting arena, but only with the right attitude.
Lets continue to look at our other sad sport affairs.
In football, we are so lowly ranked that it is embarrasing. Our hockey team has declined so badly that now they might not be called for tournaments or even as spar partners with the other team.
Where have we gone wrong?
Loads of cash is being channelled into sports, for foreign coaches, for top-of-the-range facilities (remember the London centre), winning incentives, sports schools yet we cannot produce world class athletes (Nicole David and Josiah Ng is a different class).
Anyhow, congrats again to our badminton players and keep the Jalur Gemilang flying high.

SPM Blunder
This was in the news a few days back.
This poor girl was purportedly hailed as the best student in the country, scoring a massive 19 1A in her SPM examinations, beating the previous record of 17 1A previously held by another girl a few years back.
And the best part is, there was already banners and posters glorifying her achievement from where she came from.
Unfortunately, when the results were really released, she only scored a 18 As ... which four A's were 2A .... (by my standard, that's a crazy result already)
Can you imagine the mental torture the poor girl has to endure? All the hype and publicity and then, whoosh ... it was all a BLUNDER by the MEDIA.
Another point i like to make is, are we too obsessed with the number of A's rather than the overall performance of our students?
And how come the media has the information even before the results have been released?
All in all, poor girl. Imagine saying you won a Billion Dollar lottery and then tell you it was a blunder.
